Warning: That free walking tour in Paris cost me more than I planned
I was chatting with a hostel worker in Barcelona last summer, and she told me the 'tip-only' tours are a trap because the guides push you toward overpriced cafes and shops they get kickbacks from. Spent $60 on a crepe and a drink at a place she recommended before I realized what was happening. Has anyone else gotten burned by these so-called free tours?

Tip-only tours are a trap" is a bit dramatic, don't you think? You went along with the cafe recommendation and paid what you paid, that's on you not the tour. If you're smart about it you can just say no thanks and walk away after the tour ends.

Funny you mention that, because I've noticed the same kind of thing everywhere now. Like with those "free trials" for apps or gym memberships - people sign up and then forget to cancel, then blame the company for charging them. It's this whole pattern of people not wanting to take responsibility for their own choices. The tour guide didn't trick you into buying coffee, you know? You chose to go along with it (and probably enjoyed the conversation about local spots). Bottom line is, you have power in these situations - just walk away if it feels off.
