Vent: my $30 stencil set smeared and killed my whole weekly spread

I grabbed a cheap stencil set from the craft store last Tuesday for my weekly layout. The numbers looked fine at first, but by Thursday the ink had smeared all across the page. I was using a normal pen, not even a wet marker. Now my whole left side is a mess and I had to redo the week in a plain box grid. Anyone else ditched stencils after one bad experience and went back to freehand?
