I was designing stickers to be read at 5 feet and a guy at the Riverside car wash made me rethink it
For about 8 months I was treating every sticker like a poster, cramming in a big bold line plus a smaller second line and a little drawing in the corner. Then at the car wash on Magnolia Ave in Riverside a guy waiting behind me pointed at my rear window and said he could only make out the first four words from where he stood. I got out and walked back about 30 feet and sure enough, the small stuff was mush. What got me was that most sticker reads happen in traffic, not at a show and shine, so the person behind me has maybe 3 seconds at a light. Since then I've been cutting every design down to one line, 5 to 7 words tops, and I sized up the lettering by about 40 percent. My first test batch of 6 came back way easier to read and I actually sold 4 of them at a weekend meet. My problem now is the jokes that need a setup and a punchline don't fit anymore. Curious how you all handle two-part jokes, do you split them across two stickers or just cut them?
