Guy at a Chamber mixer in Des Moines told me 'we never put anything in writing' and I nearly choked on my pretzel
I was at a small business mixer in Des Moines a few weeks back and this guy who runs a 12 person cabinet shop bragged that his whole business runs on handshakes and texts. He said it like it was a badge of honor. I asked what happens if a $9,000 job goes sideways and he goes, 'well, my word is good.' Your word is great until the other guy's word changes, and then you're both standing in front of a judge with nothing but a text that says 'sounds good.' Get a one page agreement, even a plain one, and make people sign it. Am I nuts for thinking this should be standard for anyone invoicing over a couple grand?
