Hot take: handshake deals still work fine, and my $12k deal in Tucson proves it
Everyone in this community pushes paper for everything, and I get it, lawyers like paper. But last spring I shook hands on a $12,000 landscaping job in Tucson with a guy I met at a job site, and we wrote the scope on the back of an invoice. The job finished on time, he paid in full, and nobody hired anyone. I am not saying skip contracts on big stuff with strangers, but this idea that every small deal needs a 9 page agreement is costing small shops real money. My own lawyer quoted me $1,800 to write up a simple service contract, which was more than my profit on that job. Where do you all draw the line between a handshake and paperwork for deals under $15k?
