Used to shake hands on vendor deals, now I make them sign a 2 page doc after a $6,400 mess in Reno
For years I ran my little print shop on handshake deals with paper suppliers, and it worked fine until a guy in Reno took my $6,400 deposit and delivered half the order, then claimed we never agreed on the count. Now I make everyone sign a simple 2 page contract with amounts, dates, and a late fee spelled out, even my cousin who does my signage. Some folks I know say a handshake keeps the relationship warm and a contract makes you look like you don't trust people. Others say the paper is the only thing that saves you when the other side 'forgets' what was said. So which one is it, do handshake deals still have a place or is that just asking for trouble?
