Vent: My attorney told me to sign the lease clause, ended up paying $4,800 in exit fees
Last spring I was leasing a storefront in Phoenix for my resale shop. The landlord added a personal guarantee on the renewal and my lawyer said, 'everyone signs those, it's standard, don't worry about it.' Well, I had to break the lease early when my partner got sick. Called the landlord, they pointed to that clause, and I'm on the hook for 4 months of rent. My lawyer just shrugged and said it's enforceable. Has anyone else had a lawyer downplay a risky clause and then it backfired? How do you push back next time when they say it's 'standard'?
Used to think lawyers always had your back on this stuff but after hearing this, nah. They're just reading the fine print, not protecting you from it. Next time I'd get them to write out exactly what could go wrong in plain English before I sign anything.
