inWe switched from just playing games to having a themed potluck dinner first, and the whole vibe changed.
My board game group did a similar thing for a game of Betrayal at House on the Hill. We all brought gross looking Halloween snacks and turned the lights down low. It made the spooky story so much better because we were already creeped out by the weird food. That extra layer of theme really gets people to buy into the game's world right away. It's way better than just ordering a pizza again. I read a blog post that called it "immersive snacking" and honestly that's the perfect name for it.
