Changed my mind on pocket screws for face frames after my old boss chewed me out
I spent years turning my nose up at pocket screws for face frames, figured they were a shortcut for guys who couldn't cut a mortise. Then my old boss Ray stopped by a kitchen job in Fort Worth I was wrapping up, looked at my cope and stick doors, and said flat out that he'd run pocket screws on his last 300 face frames and never had one let go. We argued for about 20 minutes and he finally asked how many of my glued and pinned joints had failed in the field, and I had to admit it was more than a few once the humidity swung. I started testing it on shop cabinets that June, and after 6 months of daily use not a single screw pulled or backed out. The bigger thing was speed, I knocked out a full run of uppers in about 3 hours instead of the 5 or 6 I was used to, and the clamps came off way faster. Now I'm not saying it replaces real joinery on the high end stuff, but for painted face frames I'm sold. What made you change your mind on a method you swore off?
