Had a drawer front split right down the middle during a glue up

I was in my shop last Thursday putting together a set of maple drawers for a kitchen job. I had just clamped the face frame when I heard a sharp crack and saw a perfect split run from top to bottom. I had to cut a whole new piece, but I think the wood was still holding a bit of moisture from the supplier. What's your go-to method for checking wood moisture before a big glue up?

Honestly, that crack sounds brutal, man.

Come on, it's just a drawer front, not a museum piece.
