Shoutout to the guy at the Omaha airport who showed me his laptop bag
I was killing time at a gate in Omaha last month when the guy next to me pulled a laptop and about six cables out of a bag with a built in grid of elastic loops. He said he flies twice a month and got tired of untangling a charger from his headphones at security, so now everything has a home and he never digs around. Do those grid bags actually hold up, or does the elastic go slack after a few months?
My dad had one of those grid bags for his camera gear back in the day, and the elastic definitely got tired after a year or so. Not totally dead, but loose enough that smaller stuff like SD cards would slip out when he opened it. The trick he figured out was buying a bag where the loops are sewn tight to the panel instead of just stitched at the ends, because those keep their shape way longer. Also worth noting that heat is the real killer, so if you leave it baking in a hot car the elastic gives up fast. My uncle's version had the same problem with his tool bag, same fix. So yeah they work great at first, just expect to replace the thing eventually.
