Rant: A stuck focus ring on a Canon AE-1 ate 3 evenings of mine

Kept thinking it was just gummed up grease and soaked it in naphtha twice with no luck. Turned out the ring was slightly bent from a drop, so it was binding on one spot the whole time. I only found it after rolling the barrel on my bench in Fresno and seeing the wobble. Anyone got a trick for spotting a bent ring before you waste a week on solvent?
