Used to scrub focus rings with alcohol until a guy in Sacramento showed me what it does to the grease
I spent about 2 years cleaning every lens I serviced with 91% isopropyl, and last month a retired tech at a shop in Sacramento popped open a focus ring I had just finished and showed me the grease had turned to chalk, which is why the ring felt gritty after 3 weeks; now I use a tiny bit of naphtha and re-lube, and I'm wondering if anyone else has a favorite grease for those older helical mounts.
My dad used to soak his bike chain in gas and wonder why it kept snapping, same idea really, strong stuff strips the life out of whatever it touches. It's wild how often "more cleaning power" turns out to be the problem instead of the fix. For those old helical mounts I've had good luck with a light lithium grease, just a thin coat so it stays smooth without grabbing dirt.
