A ranger's 2-word critique changed my whole tent setup
I was at Desolation Wilderness last August, just finished setting up my tent for the night. A ranger walked by, looked at my guy lines, and said "too tight." I thought it was about the stakes, but he meant the whole tarp situation. I had everything pulled drum tight, figured that was the way. He explained how thermal expansion in the evening heat actually loosens things, then the dew contracts it, and my tight lines were putting stress on the seams. I loosened everything maybe a half inch per line, added a little slack to the rain fly corners, and honestly the tent felt more stable in the wind that night. Has anyone else had a pro tell them something that goes against every YouTube tutorial you've watched?

Figure that tight lines shed wind better, but looseness never hurt either, so I'll take the middle ground on this one.
