Hot take: my $8 headlamp from the hardware store beat the $70 one I bought for backpacking
Bought a cheapo 3-pack of headlamps at a farm supply store in Athens for $24 total after my fancy one died on a trip. Two of them are still kicking after a year of night hikes and one very rainy weekend at Cloudland Canyon. The expensive one had a rechargeable battery that quit holding a charge, and the cheap ones just take AAA batteries I can grab anywhere. Anyone else find that the budget stuff outlasts the gear you obsess over?
Cheap gear tends to win because you can fix it or replace it without a second thought, while the fancy stuff turns into a paperweight once one little part dies. Same thing happens with kitchen stuff, my $15 rice cooker has outlived two fancier ones my friends swore by. Companies make money on the pretty features, not on stuff that actually lasts.
