I finally took that reviewer's advice about my sleeping pad

Some guy on a forum told me my old pad had an R-value of 1.8 and I was basically sleeping on ice. I switched to a 3.5 R-value pad and woke up warm for the first time in 2 years. Has anyone else ignored gear specs and regretted it?

Well, I have to respectfully disagree with that way of thinking. I've been using a basic foam pad with an R-value around 1.5 for years and stayed warm enough with a good bag and proper layering. Sometimes folks get too caught up in numbers instead of learning how to work with what they've got.

4 degrees with a 1.5 pad and I'd be frozen solid by morning, @the_ruby.
