Got told my wire runs were 'too neat' and it actually made sense

A senior installer in my old company pulled me aside after a job about six months ago. He said, 'Sam, your panels look like art, but you're adding 45 minutes to every install for no real gain.' He pointed out that the extra zip ties and perfect 90-degree bends just made future service calls harder (you know, having to cut everything out). I switched to a 'service loop and label' method instead, leaving a bit of slack at each device. It cut my average panel time down by about a third. Has anyone else had a 'less is more' moment with their install habits?

Heads up on the new wireless sensors from that big brand

I've seen three jobs this month where guys are mounting them directly to metal door frames without the insulator pad. The signal drops out after a week because the frame acts like a Faraday cage. Anyone found a good workaround besides the obvious?

Back in the day I'd run my cutterhead at full power all the time, but after burning through three impellers in a single season on the Columbia, I keep it at 80% and let the suction do more work.

Anyone else find that dialing back the aggression actually gets the material up faster on a long shift?

My laptop charger died right before a deadline in Chiang Mai

I was in a cafe in Chiang Mai, Thailand, working on a client project due that night. My laptop battery was at 10% when my charger just stopped working, no warning. The plug felt loose and it wouldn't charge at all. I panicked for a solid five minutes because I didn't know any repair shops. I ended up asking the cafe owner, who pointed me to a small tech market about a 15-minute walk away. I had to rush there with my dying laptop, find a stall that sold universal chargers, and test a new one before buying it for about 800 baht. I made it back to the cafe with maybe 2% battery left and finished the work. Has anyone else found a good way to find tech help fast in a new city?

My grandma's old way with beans versus my instant pot

She used to soak her pinto beans overnight in a big clay pot, then cook them for hours with a piece of pork hock. I got an instant pot a couple years ago and just do them from dry in under an hour. It's faster, but the flavor isn't as deep and rich as I remember from her kitchen in El Paso. Has anyone found a middle ground that keeps some of that old taste without taking all day?
