Just switched from a foam pad to an inflatable for solo trips after 6 years
I always slept on a $40 closed cell foam pad because I liked that it could never pop. Then my back started hurting on every trip, and a buddy let me try his $120 inflatable on a trip to Shenandoah. Honestly, I slept through the whole night and my back felt fine in the morning, so now I'm curious if anyone else made the switch and regretted it later.
Did the same thing about three years back and I have zero regrets. My old foam pad was bulletproof but it was basically a thin slab of concrete after a few miles, and I was waking up stiff every single morning. Grabbed a decent inflatable on sale and the difference in sleep was night and day. The one thing nobody told me is that you gotta treat it like it's made of glass, so I always clear my spot of sticks and rocks before I lay it down and I carry a patch kit just in case. Haven't had a leak yet and I've put probably 40 nights on it. The weight and pack size alone made it worth it for solo trips.
