Used to pack by memory, now I weigh every single item after that 40 mile hike
Back in 2019 I did a backpacking trip on the AT section near Damascus and my pack hit 48 lbs at the start. By day 2 I was dying. I always just threw stuff in based on what felt right. Then last spring I bought a $20 luggage scale and now I weigh everything before it goes in. Socks, tent stakes, even the stuff sack. Total base weight dropped to 29 lbs. It sounds obsessive but I dont even think about it anymore, it takes 10 minutes. Has anyone else done a total pack audit with a scale? Did it actually stick for you or did you slide back into old habits?
