Just realized asking for a raise is not the same as negotiating a salary offer
I spent 8 years at my last trucking company never asking for more money because I thought the process was the same as when you first get hired. Turns out, you have to bring actual data about your performance and market rates, not just say "I want more." I finally tried it last quarter with a list of my on-time delivery stats and a couple of job postings from competing firms. Got a 12% bump just for showing up prepared. Has anyone else found that the skill of negotiating a raise is totally different from negotiating a starting salary?

My old boss at FedEx Ground told me straight up that asking for a raise without proof was just whining. I started tracking my safety record and fuel efficiency numbers every quarter, then brought them to my review with three competitor job ads printed out. Got 9% the first time I tried it, and now I do it like clockwork every year.

Man, that's the real deal right there! I had a similar wake up call at my old job. I went in thinking I'd just talk about how long I'd been there and how much I liked the company, but my boss basically told me to come back with hard numbers. So I dug up my sales conversion rates and a few Glassdoor listings for similar roles in our area, and I walked out with a 10% raise and a better title. It really hit me that you have to treat a raise like a business case, not a favor.
