Lost $600 on a certification that never got me a call back

Last January I paid $600 for a project management certification course online, thinking it would open doors for a remote coordinator role. I finished it, updated my resume, and sent out 40 applications over three months, but every reply was either a rejection or silence. Has anyone else found that these certificates mean less than actual experience in your field?
