Appreciation post: the cheap plastic speed square I almost threw out
I always figured the $8 plastic speed square from the big box was junk next to my aluminum ones, and I said so to a young guy on my crew last spring in Fresno. He handed me his, a beat up yellow one he'd used for two years, and asked me to check it against my framing square on a rafter cut. Dead on, both legs, and it hadn't warped even sitting in his truck bed through a whole summer. I still grab the aluminum for rough layout, but the plastic one lives in my pouch now because it's light and I don't care if it falls off a ladder. What's the cheapest tool in your bag that keeps earning its spot?
