The senior carpenter who told me to stop sanding against the grain
After 8 years of building cabinets, an old-timer at a job site in Portland watched me sand a drawer front and said I was making more work for myself. He showed me how a single pass with the grain removes scratches instead of hiding them, and I cut my finishing time by about 20 minutes per cabinet. Has anyone else had a basic technique corrected after years of doing it wrong?

Holding the paper flat and using a light press works fine either way for me.

Is this really something people get hung up on? I've been writing by hand my whole life and honestly never once stressed about how I hold the paper. Flat, tilted, whatever gets the job done without cramping up your hand. Seems like one of those things where folks overthink a simple task just to have something to argue about online. Your mileage may vary, but I'd rather spend that energy on actually writing something worth reading.
