Watch those knots before you rip, lost 3 boards at the Riverside job

Was ripping 2x12s for stair stringers last Tuesday and hit a hidden knot that kicked back and shot a chunk past my ear. Now I run a pencil line over every knot before it hits the blade, has anyone else had a kickback scare like that?
