Do you add text memes right on top of the cat or keep it clean? I got roasted for my choice

I posted a meme in the Cat Meme Lab last week with the text right ON my cat's face and someone named Karen from Ohio told me it 'ruins the subject'. She said the cat should be the star not the words. But I see tons of top rated memes here with text smack in the middle so what's the REAL rule here guys? Do you crop around the cat or just overlay the text?

Three times out of four the text belongs below the cat, not on its face. Karen from Ohio needs to relax since the top posts here are half covered in impact font. I say slap the words wherever makes the joke land best.

Yeah, "slap the words wherever makes the joke land best" is basically my whole philosophy on this. I've had people message me like "why did you put the text over the cat's ear" and I just tell them I tried it below and the timing was off. With cat memes especially, you gotta place the text right on the action or the punchline reads weird. Like if the cat is mid-sneeze and the caption is under the picture, people scroll past before they even connect the two. So yeah, Karen can stay mad but my memes get shared way more when I ignore the rulebook.
