Warning: Check your rent before you sign, not after
I compared two apartments in Logan Square last month. One had a flat $1,200 rent, the other was $1,150 but with a $50 monthly 'building amenity fee' they didn't mention until I read the fine print. That second place would have cost me $1,200 anyway after the fee, plus I had to pay for laundry. I went with the first one and saved a headache. Has anyone else gotten hit with hidden fees like that after moving in?

The amenity fee thing is a total scam. Landlords know exactly what they're doing when they break out those little charges. They hope you'll just see the lower monthly number and sign without adding it all up. I caught a place trying to sneak a $35 "trash valet" fee on me last year. Like I can't walk my own trash to the dumpster without paying someone. That's a hard pass from me.

Used to roll my eyes at people complaining about fees but you and @simonmoore are totally right, it's just a trick to make the number look better on paper. Definitely checking every line before I sign anything from now on.
