Appreciation post: That old hand scraper I almost threw away
I was cleaning out my van last weekend and found this beat up hand scraper I got from my uncle back when I first started sweeping. The handle was all cracked and the blade was dull as anything. I almost tossed it in the trash but figured I'd try to sharpen it up on my bench grinder first. Spent maybe 10 minutes on it and now it cuts through creosote like butter. Honestly I think older tools just have better steel than the junk they sell at the hardware store now. It reminded me that sometimes the stuff we already own works better than whatever new thing we're looking to buy. Has anyone else had luck bringing an old scraper or brush back to life?

Funny timing, I actually just saw a YouTube video about restoring old scrapers. The guy said the same thing about the steel being way better on the vintage ones. Glad yours worked out.

Nah, Ive seen those same videos too. Funny how everyone who restores old tools ends up saying the same thing. Those old scraper blades might look beat up but they hold an edge like nobody's business. Meanwhile modern ones feel like theyre made of cheese half the time. Guess some things really were built better back when nobody cared about cutting costs lol.
