Switched from wire brushes to poly brushes on a 1950s clay flue and the sweep time doubled, so which is it?
So last month I did a ranch house out near Fort Worth with an old clay liner. I usually run wire, but the homeowner asked me to be gentle with it, so I tried poly brushes on the whole job. Took me almost two hours when the same chimney normally runs about 50 minutes. Glaze came off but it felt like I was polishing it, not cutting it.
Now I'm stuck. Half of me says poly is safer and I should just charge more for the extra time. The other half says I'm wasting a client's money scrubbing at something the wire would knock out in one pass. I've been at this 11 years and I still can't settle it.
What do you all run on older clay liners? Do you just go wire and inspect for cracks after, or stay soft and eat the extra clock?
