My dad's 66 Mustang sat in a dirt-floor barn for 8 years and this spring I finally saw what that did to it
When my dad parked his 66 Mustang in my uncle's barn back in 2016, the floor was packed dirt and we thought a couple tarps would be enough. Fast forward to this spring when we finally pulled it out, and the difference from when it went in is night and day. The tarps trapped moisture against the roof and hood, so I've got bubbling paint in two spots and a rocker panel that crunches when you push on it. The tires went flat and grew cracks so deep you can stick a fingernail in them, and the brake lines are pitted worse than anything I've seen on a car that age. My uncle kept saying the dirt floor stays dry, but turns out dirt pulls moisture right up out of the ground and into the frame rails. I spent $180 on a concrete pad for my own garage before I even thought about fixing his paint, because I'm not making that mistake twice. Has anyone here dealt with a car that sat on dirt and found a way to stop the rust from creeping back after you clean it up?
