Shoutout to the dollar store weather stripping I tried last month

I finally got around to sealing the gaps around my front door in my apartment near downtown Portland. Used a $4 foam roll from the bargain bin and measured a 5 degree difference in the hallway temperature after just 2 weeks. Did anyone else notice their heating bill drop after plugging up drafty spots? My electric bill went down like $12 this month alone.

Measured a 5 degree difference" sounds a little too precise for a dollar store foam strip. I'm skeptical that stuff holds up over time, especially by a front door that gets opened and closed a lot. My experience with cheap foam is it compresses and falls off after a month or two, so you might be back to square one soon. But hey, if it saved you $12 this month, that's real cash in your pocket, so maybe keep an eye on it and see if it lasts through the winter.

Read somewhere that cheap foam weatherstripping can actually work fine if you clean the surface with rubbing alcohol first before sticking it on. Might be worth trying if it starts peeling off.
