That heat pump I laughed at 2 years ago now pays for itself every month

I used to think heat pumps were a scam after my neighbor spent $6,000 on one in 2021 and it barely worked in January frost. Then last spring I crunched the numbers on my own 1,200 square foot house in Olympia and found I'd save $85 a month switching from baseboard electric. Has anyone else had a product they dismissed totally flip your opinion over time?

The key is getting a unit rated for your actual climate zone, not just whatever the big box store has on sale. Your Olympia winters are mild enough that a good cold climate heat pump will absolutely crush it versus baseboard electric. If your neighbor's 2021 unit struggled in frost, it was either undersized or an older model not built for those temps, and the newer ones handle freezing weather way better now.

Yeah exactly, the tech has come a long way in just a few years. The older models were basically just window AC units ran backwards, but the cold climate ones now have inverter compressors and better defrost cycles that actually keep up when it drops below freezing. It's wild how fast they improved once manufacturers started taking the heating mode seriously.
