My client's kid once spotted a missing window on a house elevation. Saved me from a major RFI.

inI finally figured out how to handle a forum question that went off the rails
That sounds so frustrating when a thread goes sideways like that. Good call stepping in with a clear reminder to focus on the wording. I've had to do something similar when a simple tech help question turned into a debate about brand loyalty. What was the final wording you went with for your boss?

inJust logged 10,000 hours on my Lincoln welder without a single transformer issue
Yeah, I mean, that's the thing. Good gear with basic care just runs. My old mill saw over 20,000 hours before we even thought about swapping it.

inOverheard a guy at the lumber yard say he always uses a 3-inch nail for the top rail on chain link
Wait you were using nails before? I mean I get it for the frame but for every single picket that sounds like a nightmare. The splitting must have been so bad, I can't even imagine hitting a knot with a nail gun on something that thin. Screws are way more forgiving, you can even back them out a little if you see it start to crack. Honestly shocked anyone still nails pickets on, that's a ton of extra work for a worse result.
