Warning: putting my AC on a smart plug to dodge peak hours actually worked, my July bill dropped $41
Back in June I read that our utility charges way more between 4 and 9pm, so I put a $20 smart plug on my window AC and set it to shut off during that window. I live in a 600 square foot apartment in Sacramento and honestly figured it would just mean a sweaty evening. Turns out the place stays cool enough if I run it hard until 4, and last month's bill came in $41 lower than July of last year. My neighbor runs his all evening and his bill went up, so now I'm wondering what else in here is quietly eating money at peak times. Has anyone tried this with a water heater or is that just asking for cold showers?

Sounds like a lot of work to save 41 bucks when your neighbor's bill barely moved, so maybe the real problem is your place leaking air or something. Water heaters pull way more power than an AC anyway, you'd be taking cold showers for like 10 dollars a month.
