Am I the only one who picked the wrong feed and speed on a 200 piece run?
Last Thursday I was setting up a run of 200 aluminum brackets on the old Haas VF2, and I had to pick between two speeds for the finish pass. The book said 3000 rpm at 40 ipm, but the guy who ran that machine for 12 years told me to try 2500 at 55 ipm because the setup was a little shaky in the vise. I went with the book numbers because I figured the engineers knew better than some guy's gut feeling. First 30 parts came out looking like a mirror, and I was feeling pretty good about myself. Then around part 45 the finish started getting chatter marks that you could see from across the shop. Turns out the vise jaws were worn just enough that the higher speed was making the part sing, and the old guy had already learned that lesson the hard way years back. I had to stop the run, swap jaws, and rerun the finish on 45 parts that were already half done. The worst part is he walked by, looked at my scrap bin, and just said 'yeah, that one bit me too back in 2019.' Now I keep a notebook by the machine with notes like that in it. Has anyone else had a setup where the speeds and feeds on paper just did not match what the machine wanted?
