Appreciation post: the old machinist at our shop in Fresno told me to stop babying my roughing passes
I ran my rougher at 60 percent stepover for two years because a guy I trained under said going harder would kill inserts. Then Ray, who has been on mills since 1989, watched me run a 4140 block and asked why I was cutting like I was scared of the machine. He bumped my stepover to 75 percent and my cycle time on that part dropped from 22 minutes to 14 with the same insert life. Any of you ever get talked into running way more conservative than you need to?
Did you ever go back and try pushing other tools too? I had a foreman bump my feed on a face mill and it felt wrong for a week, but the chips finally looked like chips instead of dust and the tool lasted just as long.
