Ran a batch of 500 parts before I learned what a G54 offset actually does
I was running a 500 part job on our old Haas mill and about 40 parts in, the operator next to me asked why my numbers looked off from his. He pulled up the offset page and showed me I'd been zeroing off the vise jaw instead of the stock, meaning every part was cutting about 0.030" shallower than the print called for. How do you all keep your offsets straight when you're bouncing between two or three machines in one shift?
Man, thirty thousandths is basically nothing in the grand scheme of things. Unless this is some kind of aerospace part or something with a real tight tolerance, that's just not that big a deal. I've seen guys scrap way worse than that and nobody lost sleep over it. You caught it at 40 parts, which means you only had 40 bad ones, not 500, so honestly that's a win in my book. The offset page is right there on the screen, it takes two seconds to glance at it before you hit cycle start on a new setup, so I don't get why this is such a crisis. Sounds like you learned a lesson and moved on, no need to overthink it.
