The old timer who told me to slow the spindle down was right
A retired machinist named Pete watched me fight with chatter on a 6061 job last month and told me to drop my RPM from 8000 to 5500. I figured he was stuck in the old days, but the finish came out perfect after I tried it. Anyone else had a veteran's tip that seemed outdated but actually fixed the problem?
Had the same thing happen with a crusty tool grinder guy who told me my feed was way too fast on a finishing pass. Cut it in half and the tool marks pretty much disappeared. Those old guys ran manual machines for 30 years, they feel the cut instead of trusting a screen.
