Watched a guy at the tool show in Cleveland dial in a boring bar by ear, no indicator at all
Stopped by the tool show in Cleveland a few weeks back and spent most of my time at the live cutting demos. One old timer running a lathe leaned in and called out his finish by sound alone, said the chatter was about .002 too deep before he even checked a mic. Sure enough, he backed the bar off and the part came out dead on. I can hear a bad cut coming from across the shop but I never tried trusting it to that level. Anybody here actually run a machine by ear, or is that just something the old heads pull off?
The chatter was about .002 too deep is wild. Dude heard two thousandths of an inch with his ears? I can barely tell if my car needs an oil change by sound and this guy is out here doing machine work like a bat.
