I was sure Python was the only good first language until I watched a friend's kid learn Scratch

Last Friday, I saw my buddy's 8-year-old make a little game where a cat chased a mouse around the screen. He was dragging blocks together, not typing a single line. In about 20 minutes, he had something that worked and he totally got the 'if this, then that' logic. I'd always pushed Python on newbies, but seeing that click for a kid made me rethink where to actually start. What's a better first project for a total beginner: making a simple game like that, or jumping right into text-based code?

That Scratch moment is pretty eye opening, isn't it? Paige_martin has a point about just starting somewhere, but seeing that instant win with a game is hard to beat. Maybe the best first project is just the one that doesn't feel like work.

Start with the game, hands down.

Just pick one and play it. You can always change your mind later.
