Watched a guy debug a loop on paper at the library in Akron and it clicked for me
I had been stuck on the same while loop for 3 days, just staring at it and rerunning it. A retired guy named Harold at the Akron library computer lab saw me sighing and told me to print the code out and trace it with a pen, and the bug jumped out in about 4 minutes. I felt silly but also relieved, because no video had ever explained it that way. Does anyone else still trace code by hand, or is that something people grow out of?
Man, I gotta disagree with the idea that it's something you grow out of. I still print stuff out sometimes and I've been doing this for years, it's not a beginner thing at all. There's something about the pen and paper that slows your brain down just enough to actually see what's happening.
