PSA: weighing beans by scoops instead of grams is quietly wrecking your brew
Last week I made two pots from the same bag of Ethiopian beans, one with my usual two rounded scoops and one weighed out to 18 grams on a cheap kitchen scale. The weighed pot tasted bright and clean, and the scoop pot came out muddy and a little bitter, and I bet the scoop was closer to 24 grams. Turns out a "scoop" can swing 40 percent depending on the bean size, so my ratio was random the whole time, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one. So which side are you on: do scoops work fine if you're consistent, or is a $12 scale the first thing a new brewer should buy? I'm honestly torn on whether the scale matters more than upgrading my grinder first.
