I used a shop vac with a HEPA filter for a standard cleanout in a 1920s house and the amount of fine dust it pulled from the air after I was 'done' was frankly alarming.

Man, that's wild. I started doing a second pass with a HEPA vac too, and it's shocking how much stuff it still gets. Really makes you rethink what "clean" means.

Can we talk about how we all used to handle extractions

Oh man, this is SO real. I was taught the exact same thing, rush in right after the steam. Made me feel like I was in a race. Switched to waiting a solid ten minutes a couple years ago after a master class totally changed my mind. The pore softening is just on another level. Clients barely flinch now, and the clarity I get by the next day is honestly wild. It’s a total game changer for skin that marks up easy.

Getting the right heat base for a big bubble trap took me four days

But what if you're just trading one bad habit for another? You're right that cranking the heat is a quick fix that can ruin the glass later, but isn't adding a forced wait time without understanding why just another kind of rush? Like @noahclark said, that minute lets the structure set, but you have to know what a "set" structure feels like. If you don't learn the right heat from the start, you're just guessing on the cooling time too. Then you end up with a piece that holds shape but might crack in a week because the internal stress is still wrong. The timer only helps if you're already using it to learn what proper heat control looks and feels like.

My fridge looked like a crime scene after a week of meal prep for my sister's wedding

Honestly that "single cooking mode" is real. My friend made a pot of chili so big last week that he had to freeze half of it.

My friend's kid threw the controller during a heated Overcooked round

My buddy's kid had a meltdown over Mario Kart, derek_burns87, so maybe it depends on the kid.
