The barista’s one question that fixed my bad wifi days
I work out of this shop in Portland called Mugs & Keys and last Tuesday the wifi kept dropping every 10 minutes. The barista saw me cursing at my laptop and asked, “You on the 5G network or the guest one?” I switched to their 5G and it’s been rock solid for 3 days now, anyone else ever ignore the network names and just blame the coffee shop?
That barista asking about the 5G network is a LIFESAVER. I had the same thing happen at a place downtown and I was ready to throw my router out the window. Turns out the guest network is usually throttled or has way more people on it, so it feels like dial-up. I always check the network names now and pick the one with the strongest signal, even if it looks sketchy. Also, if it keeps dropping, ask the staff if they rebooted their router recently, that fixes a shocking amount of issues. People really do blame the shop when it's just a settings problem on their own laptop. Once I figured that out, I stopped wasting an hour restarting my computer every time.
