I sorted my whole longbox by cover color for 3 years and a guy at Heroes Con in Charlotte asked me why none of my runs were complete
I thought I was being smart by pulling single issues out of runs and filing them by spine color because my shelf looked so clean. Last month at Heroes Con in Charlotte this older collector asked to see my Batman stuff and I couldn't find Knightfall because half of it was under blue and half under black. He laughed and said he did the same thing back in 1994 and lost a whole X-Men run for two years. So now I'm pulling 27 short boxes apart and trying to rebuild runs by writer and title, which is way more work than just doing it right the first time. Did anybody else start out organizing by something dumb like color or cover artist before switching to runs?
Oh man, I did the exact same thing but with cover artists for like a year and a half. Had all my Jim Lee stuff together, all my McFarlane stuff together, and my Claremont X-Men run was scattered across four boxes in some kind of art gallery mess. The worst part was when I finally wanted to reread a full arc and had to dig through every box like I was on some kind of treasure hunt. My buddy still gives me crap about the time I couldn't find issue 3 of a five issue run because it had a different cover artist than the other four. Now everything sits in runs by title and writer and I just deal with the shelf looking however it looks. Lesson learned the hard way, same as you.
