18 years in and I just learned my bailout valve was set wrong
Been diving since my first Gulf of Mexico job in 2007, always checked my regs and hoses like everyone taught me. Last month during a platform inspection off Galveston, a green hat asked why my bailout pressure was at 180 and his was at 200. Nobody ever told me the setting changes if you're doing mixed gas vs air, so I've been running rich the whole time on shallow jobs. Anyone else find out a basic setting they've been screwing up for years, or is it just me?

Wait, why are you blaming yourself when the real problem might be the guy who set up that reg in the first place? Someone built and tuned that bailout before you ever touched it, and if the shop or the guy handing it off never flagged the setting, that's on them, not you. Plenty of divers run 180 on shallow air work on purpose, it gives you a little more and the difference only matters when you're deep on mix. So maybe stop feeling bad and go ask whoever set it what they were thinking.
