Hand signals alone aren't enough for complex jobs
Everyone relies on basic hand signals, but I've seen too many mix-ups. We should push for more use of underwater comms, even on smaller projects. It might cost more, but the safety boost is worth it.

Tell me about it, last time someone gave the "okay" signal from a distance it looked like they were asking for three more bagels. Suddenly we're hauling up extra gear instead of checking the weld. Sure the comms units cost a pretty penny, but so does redoing a whole section because my buddy thought I wanted a sandwich. Guess some teams would rather play expensive charades than just talk.

My friend's crew once tried flag semaphore, @the_jenny. It went badly.

Remember hearing about a crew that had their topside radios break down for a whole afternoon. They ended up using a kid's walkie talkie set someone had in their truck, and the foreman was yelling into a bright pink plastic handset all day. It was a mess of static and low batteries, but they made it work somehow. Just shows how even the simple stuff we take for granted can fall apart, and you're left with whatever crazy fix you can find. Not quite bagels, but close.
