I was gearing up for a dock inspection at a marina outside Tampa when I heard an old instructor say that to a green tender who asked about moving up. At first it sounded harsh, but he meant that in the water you don't get credit for how smart you are on land, the job only cares that you show up, breathe right, and do what the hat says.
