My first dive tender in 2019 vs the new kids now, the gear chatter alone is a different world
Last week I was working a job on the Houston Ship Channel and this kid on my crew pulled out a little dive computer the size of a wristwatch and started rattling off numbers while I was still trying to read my old analog gauge in murky water. Back in 2019, when I did my first tender gig down in Morgan City, we had one guy on the barge whose whole job was keeping time on a dive watch and shouting out the minutes over the comms. I remember standing there in 8 feet of water with a busted light and no backup, just feeling my way along a pipeline with my hand because that was the drill. Now these young divers have heads up displays inside the helmet, live depth readouts, and a guy on deck watching every breath on a tablet. Tbh I am not knocking it, half my near misses back then were from guessing instead of knowing. But there was something about learning to trust your own hands first that I do not see as much. Do you all think the new gear makes divers safer or just more dependent on the screen?
