Backflow valve froze solid in Minneapolis last week, 3 floors of sewage backup
We had a 4 inch backflow preventer seize up during that cold snap, the disc cracked and the whole stack backed up into a break room. Took 6 hours and a wet vac crew to dig out the mess, plus $1,800 in parts. Has anyone else had issues with those rubber discs getting brittle below 10 degrees even with heat trace on them?

Is that rubber disc thing a known issue, or did we both just get unlucky with bad batches? Same thing happened to me over in St. Paul during that arctic blast, the heat trace was working fine but the disc still turned to glass and shattered. We thought we had it wrapped good too, but it didn't matter one bit. Ended up with 2 feet of nasty water in the maintenance closet, and it took two days to get the smell out even after we pumped everything. The worst part is these things are supposed to handle cold, but clearly they don't. I swear I'm going to start keeping a spare disc in my truck from now on, just in case.
