Crossplay lobbies used to be a ghost town, now they're full of friends
I remember back in 2018 when crossplay first started showing up in shooters, my PS4 friends and I barely bothered matching with Xbox folks since voice chat was broken half the time. Fast forward to last weekend, I hopped into a ranked match on my Series S and ended up in a squad with two Switch players and a PlayStation guy who all had mics working perfectly. The setup took maybe 30 seconds, zero fuss, and we ran three solid hours together. That kind of thing just didn't happen five years ago without some third-party app and a prayer. What finally pushed it over the edge for me was the built-in party chat and shared game invites, no more juggling Discord on a phone. Anyone else notice how much smoother cross-platform squads feel now compared to the early days?
Right? That exact thing happened to me last month on Fortnite, of all games. I’m on PC, but I got thrown into a trios lobby with a dude on PS5 and another on an old Xbox One, and we all had mics from the jump. The Xbox player’s game audio dropped once, but the in-game join menu fixed it in one tap, no restart needed. Back in 2020, I’d have had to text them my Discord server link and hope they saw it before the match started. Now it’s like the platforms finally stopped pretending each other don’t exist. You still get the occasional weird lobby lag, but honestly, it’s night and day from the old days.
